Associate professor in biostatistics


A position as associate professor in biostatistics is vacant at the Research Unit of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography, Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark.

The Research Unit of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography at the University of Southern Denmark is well-known for its research of a broad range of human health aspects. As a core this involves optimal methodology and analyzing complex data structures (longitudinal and survival data, correlated data, missing data, censured data, misclassification data, extreme data, Bayesian techniques, statistical techniques for GWAs and EWAs, etc.)
The applicant will work in a multi-disciplinary team of epidemiologists, computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians, biodemographers, database managers, and biostatisticians.


The focus of the position will be: 

1) Statistical methods for health science data. The biostatistics group collaborates on problems involving high dimensional “omics” data, spatial data, and general highly structured temporal data from family studies. The successful candidate must have interest in aiming at the optimal approach for analysis of such data. 

2) Biostatistical contribution in clinical research. The group contributes to clinical studies from classic randomized clinical trials to very specialized clinical studies for prevention, treatment, and prediction for instance from biomarker profiles and several more. The position involves biostatistical expertise and responsibility in such studies with contribution to designs of experiment, methodology, and analysis. 

3) The biostatistics group connects with international networks of expertise. The applicant will be expected to engage himself/herself in new developments and to bridge these with locally represented fields. 

4) The applicant will  be expected to engage himself/herself in the biostatistics group as concerns teaching statistics at all levels and supervision of students and researchers from related fields.

Expectations of qualifications:
Major requierements: 
  • a PhD in biostatistics, mathematics, or statistics and experience from a position as assistant professor or postdoc,
  • demonstrated methodological development in biostatistics, mathematics, or statistics,
  • a strong interest in pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in supervising students and researchers.
 Other requirements:
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • excellent analytic abilities,
  • fluent English language skills (written and spoken language),
  • capable of working independently as well as in multidisciplinary teams,
  • motivated to explore new knowledge and new skills, 
  • ability to conduct innovative research,
  • a strong team player.

For applicants not speaking a Scandinavian language it is emphasized that the primary teaching language is Danish. Thus, the candidate will be expected to learn Danish (basic level) within the first three years. However, both the University of Southern Denmark and the Odense municipality are supporting foreigners through customized language training activities taking personal background and skills into account .
